In Porto most of your sightseeing will be done by foot. Even though there aren’t many times you will use public transportation it will be good to know what and how when you do. The most common form of transportation in the city is the Metro. There are few times any tourist will need to use the bus and a taxi just makes everything easy but expensive, usually would be used to go to a restaurant or bar at night outside the city center.

Metro

The Metro covers most of the city. It runs from 6:00-01:00, stations are marked with a wavy blue letter ‘M’.

When arriving in Porto you should purchase an ‘Andante’ card at a station ticket machine. This card can be recharged and be used as your ticket for the ride.

Bus

The buses are called STCP and operate 06:00-21:00. From 21:00-01:00 the buses still run, but less frequently. Tickets can be purchased from the driver and then validate at the machine in the bus. For bus routes check www.stpc.pt.

Trams

There are three operational tram routes- 1,18 and 22. With tram route 1 you can have a pleasant ride to the beaches. Tickets can be bought from the driver.
